Review: ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED)

0

ASUS recently announced the updated VivoBook 15 with the latest 11th Generation Intel Core processors, ASUS Intelligent Performance Technology, and an OLED display. The company is calling it the VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED) and it comes in stylish colours aimed at the younger crowd.

DESIGN AND DISPLAY
The ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED is made from a combination of aluminium alloy and plastic to create a lightweight but durable design. The laptop is available in Indie Black and Transparent Silver colour options. The laptop also measures less than 20 mm in thickness and weighs only 1.8 kgs.

You also get a Full HD NanoEdge display on the new VivoBook 15 OLED with a narrow bezel on the top and on the sides. The display offers up to an 85% screen-to-body ratio, wide viewing angles at 178-degrees, and very good colour reproduction. The OLED panel used in the display are also TÜV Rheinland-certified for eye care, with low blue-light emissions and flicker-free visuals.

The display measures 15.6-inches and offers a resolution of 1920-by-1080 pixels. You also get a 0.2 ms response time and the OLED panel also supports HDR. If you are a content creator, you will be thrilled to know that the display offers an ultrawide colour gamut of 100% DCI-P3, which is widely used in the motion picture industry and is PANTONE Validated to provide the most precise colour accuracy.

The VivoBook 15 OLED also comes packed with an advanced video tuning system called ASUS Tru2Life Video technology that works like those found in high-end TVs. According to ASUS, Tru2Life Video enhances clarity, colour, and contrast in the video. It intercepts image and video signals being sent to the panel, then analyses every single pixel in every frame to optimise the brightness, contrast, colour and sharpness.

HARDWARE AND I/O PORTS
Under the hood, the VivoBook 15 OLED rocks an 11th Gen Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor, running at a clock speed of 2.40GHz. You also get 8GB of RAM and 512GB of PCIe SSD storage. The laptop also offers space for a 2.5-inch SATA 6Gbps drive, which will allow you to match the 2.5-inch SATA HDD with a maximum 2TB drive or upgrade to a larger capacity in the future.

The graphics is handled by NVIDIA MX350 with 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Wireless connectivity is handled by Intel WiFi 6 with Gig+ (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.0. The battery on this laptop is rated at 42Wh. In terms of the I/O ports, you get plenty, such as a USB-C, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A port, two USB2.0 for data transfers, a full-sized HDMI that supports 4K video output, 3.5mm combo audio jack, and a MicroSD card reader.

Despite its compact form factor, the VivoBook 15 OLED also features a full-sized keyboard with keys that have an almost 19 mm wide pitch. This is a pitch similar to those found on desktop PC keyboards – so it helps with comfortable and accurate typing. The keyboard is also backlit for convenient typing in dark environments and it is also spill-resistant.

The keys of the VivoBook 15 OLED feature a subtle 0.15 mm dish-shaped indentation and 1.4 mm key travel. The dish-shaped indentation on the keys helps to guide fingers, and the long key travel provides for better feedback. The TouchPad meanwhile has a fingerprint sensor for added security. The audio on the VivoBook 15 OLED is powered by Harman Kardon and it has been tuned by ASUS’ very own Golden Ear team.

COLLABORATION FEATURES
By using the Link to MyASUS feature, you can now seamlessly integrate your laptop with your smartphone. This feature is part of the MyASUS software and it allows you to use the full phone functionality on a connected laptop or PC, via mouse, keyboard or touchscreen.

By Screen Mirroring, you can check phone messages, make a call, send message replies or perform other smartphone functions — all via Bluetooth with a linked PC. You can also instantly share files between a linked smartphone and PC by simply tapping the share icon.

You can also easily share a URL from a PC by simply tapping the share icon in the browser and then clicking MyASUS. The link will instantly be sent to the linked mobile device, where it will open automatically. With Link to MyASUS you can seamlessly make or receive phone calls using a linked PC. In addition, you can remotely access files, and use any Android device as an extended screen to drag images, play videos or open documents.

PERFORMANCE
The overall design and build quality is very good. On top, the lid has a textureless metallic finish which I really loved. The OLED HDR screen on this one is brilliant and everything looked sharp and vivid. In terms of performance, the VivoBook 15 OLED holds its ground. Whether it is a day to day computing, productivity applications or tasks such as video editing, it does a very good job.

Gaming is an area where the VivoBook 15 OLED aces – we were able to play games such as Fortnite, GTA V and Watch Dogs, without any issues at all. Battery life is very good, too, at around 10.5 hours on a single charge. For a price of AED 3199, the ASUS VivoBook 15 OLED (K513 OLED) sounds like a very good deal, if you are looking for a dependable laptop on a budget.

Price: AED 3199 (as tested, Intel Core i5-1135G7), AED 4599 (Intel Core i7-1165G7)
