ROG launched its Flow series gaming laptops that offered performance, even though they weighed in at just under 1.3 kgs. With the new ROG FLOW X16, the company has now introduced a redesigned 16-inch ultraslim device with XG Mobile compatibility – all packed into an ultra-compact 15-inch chassis.

Measuring just 19.4 mm in thickness, the FLOW X16 is available either in Off Black or Eclipse Gray colour options. ASUS has also thrown in a “gravity wave” textured design onto the entire ultra-slim magnesium alloy chassis to give the FLOW X16 a unique style.

As you open up the laptop’s lid, you come face to face with a 16-inch mini LED display that offers an aspect ratio of 16:10 and a contrast ratio of 100,000:1. The display also offers WQXGA resolution of 2560-by-1600 pixels, a 165Hz refresh rate, a 3ms response time, support for 100% DCI-P3 colours and a peak brightness of 1100 nits.

On top of the display is where you will find a 3DNR HD IR web camera that supports Windows Hello. In terms of I/O ports, you get a boatload. There is one ROG XG Mobile interface and Type-C support with USB3.2 Gen2, one DisplayPort 1.4 with Gsync/VR and power delivery support, one USB 3.2 Type-C (DisplayPort 1.4 + PD support), two Type-A USB3.2 Gen2, one HDMI 2.0b, one Micro SD card reader slot, and a 3.5mm audio combo jack.

Under the hood, the FLOW X16 is equipped with up to an AMD Rembrandt 6900HS processor and up to an Nvidia Geforce RTX3070 Ti GPU. You also get up to 32GB of high-efficiency DDR5 memory running at 4800MHz, and two PCIe Gen 4×4 SSD slots. Our review unit came with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage space.

Wireless connectivity is supported by Wi-Fi 6E 802.11ax and Bluetooth v5.2. The ROG Flow X16 builds upon the company’s years of Intelligent Cooling experience. Thermal Grizzly liquid metal thermal compound, a unique Tri-fan thermal module, and the ability to stay completely silent with 0dB Ambient Cooling Technology keep the Flow X16 cool even under demanding circumstances.

Typing on the keyboard is also a satisfying experience. With N-key rollover, a 1.7mm travel distance, and single-zone RGB with Aura Sync support, the keyboard has the same premium feature set as our other ROG laptops. When used in tablet mode, the 16-inches touchscreen display allows for effortless enjoyment of your favourite mobile and touch-compatible games.

For supported games, the X16 also connects seamlessly with wireless controllers for a whole new take on ultra-portable gaming. You can pair up to four controllers and put the X16 in tent mode to benefit from it. The FLOW X16 also offers virtual 5.1.2-channel surround sound, which is powered by Dolby Atmos.

In order to test out the real-world performance of the ROG FLOW X16, we ran a bunch of benchmarks on it. In 3DMark 13 – Fire Strike, we clocked 21011 points, with graphics standing at 22109 points and physics standing at 25091. In PCMark 10, we got an overall score of 6873 points. In GeekBench 5.4.3, we got a 64-bit single-core score of 1513, and a 64-bit multi-core score of 9011. These are some excellent results for a thin-and-light notebook.

The ROG FLOW X16 is a well-designed laptop that offers a convertible form factor with a touchscreen and pen support. You also get a good selection of ports, powerful specs, and good battery life, thanks to its 90Wh battery. If you are looking for a performance-based convertible, the ROG FLOW X16 could match your requirements.
